You play Sammy the Snowman. Sammy has never gotten along with humans. They've always been scared of him. He's learned to just avoid them. This has made Sammy very lonely, which is why he made himself a companion, Snowanna. Snowanna did not come to life like Sammy did, but Sammy was happy just to have someone he could talk to. One day, a snow plow ran over Snowanna. Sammy was filled with rage. He will not rest until he spreads fire to every house in the village.

Post Game Jam Updates and Comments:

I added some levels, visuals, and sound plus an opening and ending. There's still a lot more that could be done, but it's actually a fully playable game now. Voice lines are played at the end of each level and end screen, all recorded by my friend Kevin, so thanks to him for that. I don't know much about audio stuff, so it's a little rough at parts. It shouldn't be too loud by default, but because there's no other sound, I wanted to give a warning. So, to anyone who reads this, just be prepared. Also, it's a little annoying to move back and forth after the puzzle is solved, but eh.

I updated the game title kind of. I'll leave it as is on most things, but I never knew what to call this thing. My favorite was probably "Sleighing with Fire" but it doesn't have anything to do with sleighs, so I couldn't go with that. And it seems kind of silly to add sleighs in the game just to make the name work. So for now, "Sammy's Snowburn" is what I've settled on.

This has been fun and I'm happy with where this game has gotten. There's still a lot more I could add, but there's a lot of other projects I want to get to as well, so I might take a little break soon. I'll probably still add a few more levels in the near future. And maybe I'll add some music and a start menu with volume controls.

As far as other things I've considered and might add in the future:

  • Add background visuals for the opening and ending.
  • Add arration for the opening.
  • Add more voice lines and not just random after beating levels
  • Have someone who knows what they're doing with art redo everything. (I've kind of grown to like what the overall style has become at least on Desktop, but I'm no good at art and having a real artist work on it would improve it dramatically.)
  • Add animation. (This one would be a bit challenging because all of my logic is basically just writing values to the grid map, so I can't really update the blocks as individual actors like you normally would for this. It's still doable, I would just have to rethink how to make it work.)
  • Create more levels as there's a lot more to explore with the concepts.
  • Add additional block types, such as an ice block that doesn't melt.
  • Make it so that once a puzzle is solved, the fire burning the houses down plays out automatically.
  • Update to one big level instead of multiple individual levels so that the different puzzles can interact with each other.
  • Make it so that undo can undo the restart action.
  • Update visuals and and atmosphere for web.
  • Fix performance issues on web and look into performance as a whole.
  • Give performance options including things like snow particles.
  • Add day/night option for visual variety or make some levels day and some night.
  • Add Save points and level selection.

We'll see where all of this goes in the future, but for now, thanks for playing!
